Our School Library

In 2023-24, Brookland Junior Pupils designed, voted and created a brand-new school library.

Every pupil had a voice and drew designs for the graffiti artist, selected book genres and texts, voted for the shelving choices and chose the comfortable, flexible seating.

Each class visits the library at least once a week during the school day to read, select books and recommend texts to each other. The children can read outdoors in the courtyard, on sofas, beanbags or cushions - with many reading in comfortable, reclined positions.

The library is also opened for the first half of lunchtime on Tuesday - Friday. This allows children to relax, be calm and read regularly for pleasure.

Our library is managed by a pupil team of 'librarians' from Year 3 - Year 6. These children are in charge of checking, organising and scanning texts into the library. They are trained by the reading lead to recommend and suggest texts and genres to other pupils. As a reward for their volunteering, pupils have meet and greets with authors, who visit our school, and have Monday lunchtimes for their own private library usage.

“I like the library because you don’t have to pick a certain genre of books. All genres are there and teachers help us choose them,” - Tommy, Year 6.

“I love graphic novels as pictures bring the book to life,” - Buddy, Year 6.

“Since the library, I feel like I’m in the book. Now, I am a reader. I really like the Armistice Runner after reading it as a class!" - Herchal, Year 6.

"I like non-fiction texts. My favourite is the London book which we looked at in History," - Eva, Year 3.

"I enjoy reading books because they are entertaining and the library is a special place," - Aiden, Year 3.
