Music
Our Intent
Here at Brookland Junior School, we pride ourselves on a curriculum rich with musical opportunities. From school productions and performances to class assemblies and Christmas song performances, our children have many opportunities to practise singing and playing together and performing to an audience, both in school and externally.
We work in collaboration with the local Hertfordshire Music hub and local secondary school to deliver a rich, broad and balanced curriculum designed to build confidence and enjoyment of music.
We use the new model music scheme from Charanga’s scheme of work and resources to ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious music curriculum that inspires and excites our pupils. We cover a wide variety of topics and themes, ensuring the coverage of the key skills of composition, singing, performance, improvisation and listening and appraising.
We regularly use a variety of percussion instruments, both tuned and untuned, to accompany our singing units as well as learn to play the recorder. Teachers ensure that a variety of genres are listened to from various time periods to enable all pupils to develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity in music.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Musical activities and opportunities are offered throughout the school. In years 3 and 4, children can join a Christmas Singing Club who rehearse to perform a selection of songs to the public. In years 5 and 6, the children can perform at the 02, along with choirs from other schools in the Young Voices concert.
Children can sign up to Rock Steady, where they get the opportunity to learn an instrument and create a band, culminating in a performance for parents.
We also run a Makaton singing club at lunchtimes where children work towards a performance for parents. Violin and Piano lessons are offered for those wishing for private tuition.
