Our Intent
Our writing curriculum prioritises the craft of writing, guiding students to make purposeful, creative choices and develop a sense of authorial intent rather than simply replicating content. We aim to foster thoughtful, intentional writers who understand the nuances of their language choices and the effects these can have on readers. It is designed to be broad, balanced, and inclusive, nurturing each child's potential and fostering a deep appreciation for language. At the heart of our approach is the commitment to empower every pupil to become an expressive and confident writer. We provide a robust foundation that enables children to write with purpose, clarity, and creativity, equipping them with skills they need for lifelong learning and success. At Brookland, we write for purpose and audience: sharing work in assemblies, across year groups, with our local community and through competitions.
Students learn to approach writing with the mindset of an author, making conscious choices around language, structure, and style to suit their purpose—whether to entertain, inform, persuade, or (in Years 5 and 6) discuss. Lessons are centred around diverse, high-quality texts that serve as models for particular skills or styles, providing students with a benchmark for excellence and helping them grasp the deeper motivations behind an author’s choices. By exposing children to a diverse range of authors, text types, and genres, we enrich their cultural capital and broaden their understanding of the world around them. Through this, we support pupils in building a love for words and stories. Through analysis and imitation, pupils develop a toolkit of techniques they can adapt to their own writing, gradually crafting unique voices and styles.
