Pupil Premium

Introduced in 2011, the Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils, and close the gap between them and their peers.

The information below gives further details of our Pupil Premium Grant and how we allocate the funding.

Pupil Premium Funding

Pupil premium is additional funding from the government, provided to schools to support pupils from low income families to ensure they benefit from the same opportunities as all other children. There are three categories of children that qualify for pupil premium:

  • Children who are eligible for free school meals (FSM)
  • Looked after children
  • Armed forces children

It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils for whom they are responsible. Schools have the freedom to spend the premium, which is additional to the underlying schools budget, in a way they think will best support the raising of attainment for the most vulnerable pupils.

At Brookland Junior all our staff and governors understand that we have pupils who are socially disadvantaged and we are committed to meeting their pastoral, social and academic needs within a caring environment. The targeted and strategic use of pupil premium will support us in achieving our vision.

Principles

We seek to ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all the pupils;

We seek to ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups. This includes ensuring that the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and addressed.

In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged.

Pupil premium funding will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals.
